fluorescent light question by Mick[_3_]
In old style long fluorescent tubes, you had the tube plus the starter & the choke/ballast. What's happened to the starter & the choke/ballast in the current compact models? Also I had heard that the old style tubes were more efficient than regular bulbs. But if you frequently turn on & off then...

I got sucked into buying chicken dogs. by James[_4_]
Bought a package of Bar S hot dog for $1. I thought I'll try it because it had big "Made with Chicken, Pork and Beef" on the package. At home I read the fine print. Is contains more water than pork, and more salt than beef. So much for buying American.

Conspicuous virtue? by Steve[_5_]
Excerpts from http://online.wsj.com/article/SB117462054041346510.html Conspicuous consumption stays with us today. But many consumers are not seeking an outright demonstration of wealth. Instead, they consume to demonstrate their innate goodness. They spend not to suggest the deepness of their...

WHAT BIG CHAINS OF MOTELS ACCEPT DOGS??? by meteore
Hi, I am planning to drive down south tomorrow or the next day, if my cold subsides. I am aware Best Western accepts dogs. I do not wish to make a reservation, as I am not 100 percent sure I am going. What other big motel chains on route 95S or 81S accept pets? Thanks.

Banging pipes II by Tockk
Thanks for y'all's helpful advice with the banging pipes . . . I took out the offending water valve, ran down to various hardware shops, but no one has a replacement. Ugh. So I traded the hot water valve that made pipes bang with a cold water valve, and all is well. I've never seen valves...

The Forever Stamps by val189
Surely, someone here has already worked out a formula based on past usage, inflation, etc. as to rate increase history.....how worthwhile will it be to load up on these stamps? Granted, this is probably nickle and dime stuff, but it might be useful for those of us who do heavy first class...

Explain Something About Cellular Phones To Me by Arthur Shapiro[_1_]
I've long been contemptuous of cellular phones - a device that can let one clown annoy an entire restaurant of people - but have reluctantly decided to get a prepaid plan for relatively infrequent use. If I'm out with the bicycle club and I'm later than expected, it would be nice to call the...

Interesting phenomena... by Mary Mathews
Yesterday at the ATM, I inserted the card, and entered the pin. I was then informed that my transaction was being processed. Well! I had not entered my transaction! Then it demanded that I take the money and the receipt. I did, and my card was returned. I always withdraw the same amount, and I...
